Las Calzadas Winery
Family Wines
Las Calzadas Winery was established in 2017 with young winemaker Daniel Sevilla at the helm. After studying in Rioja and working in various Spanish DOs, as well as in Australia and New Zealand, he decided to return to his hometown at a young age. There, he created a winery using some of his family’s old vineyards on pebble soil, which his father and viticulturist, Jose Julián, maintains organically. Daniel employs a unique winemaking method using ancient clay jars up to 120 years old, salvaged from old wineries. Assembling the collection of 27 ancient jars of various capacities and shapes, which impart a completely different personality to the Tinácula wines (named after the Latin word for small jar), was a challenging task.
The winery is located in Pozoamargo, a village with just 300 inhabitants. Las Calzadas has been a pioneering winery in reviving the tradition of aging wines in clay jars. It has become a global reference, as its wines are aged in traditional Manchegan clay jars from the last great jar maker, Tomás Orozco.
2015
Daniel Sevilla, owner and winemaker of Las Calzadas Winery, began producing wine in clay jars in 2015.
The family winery is built to resemble an artisanal winery from the early 20th century in the area and is also strongly committed to wine tourism: offering tours, tastings, and meals prepared by Josefina Medina, Daniel’s mother, who also illustrates the wine labels.

His wines are made in clay jars
His wines are made in amphoras or clay jars over 300 years old. These artisanal wines come from the family’s old vineyards, cultivated to offer a unique product with limited production: 25,000 bottles annually. The entire process is carefully controlled to maintain the quality of all their products.
