Teatinos
Pioneering monks in viticulture
Following the tradition of “Los Teatinos,” a group of local vintners established the Purísima Concepción Cooperative Winery in 1958. Today, it spans 2,300 hectares of vineyards from nearly 300 members. From the beginning, the winery set a goal to continue the work started centuries ago, combining the highest current technology with the artisanal techniques of those pioneering monks.
Its origins date back to the 16th century when monks of the Theatine order founded a school in the south of the province of Cuenca, on an estate called Finca Los Teatinos. People began working there, gradually forming a new municipality that gained independence in 1670 under the name Casas de Fernando Alonso. The Theatine monks became pioneers in viticulture and winemaking in the area, initially for their own consumption and that of the estate workers. Later, as their wines gained fame, they began to commercialize them, becoming the foundation of the region’s agriculture.
